A floating unit 50 for X-, Y-, and Z-directions is mounted on a base 20 held on a travel mechanism, and fitted with the first and the second suction pad mechanisms 60 and 70. A sensor 24 detects whether a transfer head device with the mechanisms 60 and 70 come in contact with an object. By moving the transfer head device to the object and identifies whether the object is a cathode-ray tube 10 or a flat plate 12. Then, when the object is identified as the cathode-ray tube 10. the first suction pad mechanism 60 is operated to suck and hold the cathode-ray tube 10. When the object is identified as the flat plate 12, the second suction pad mechanism 70 is operated to suck and hold the plate 12. In this case, an error or a shock is absorbed through a floating function. Also, the floating function is locked in an invalid state at a transfer process, and the object is held in a stable state, thereby allowing the quick transfer of the object.
