PURPOSE: To prevent the occurrence of irregular rotation of a transfer roller and a peripheral speed difference with respect to an image carrier when a toner image is transferred on a recording sheet by allowing a cleaning member to contact with the transfer roller for cleaning when the transfer action of the transfer roller is absent, and separating the cleaning member when the transfer action is present.

CONSTITUTION: The cleaning member 9 capable of attaching/detaching with the transfer roller 5 capable of contacting with the image carrier 1 is provided. Then, the cleaning member is brought into contact with the transfer roller to attain cleaning except the time of transfer action of the transfer roller is present.
