To obtain a catalyst which is suitable as a catalyst for olefin polymerization and has overcome the defects of the known catalysts by using a transition metal complex represented by a specific formula as the active ingredient.
The catalyst for olefin polymerization comprises, as the active ingredient, a transition metal complex of formula I wherein M is Ti, Zr, Hf, V, Nb, Ta or a rare earth metal; X is a halogen, H, 1-10C alkyl, 6-15C aryl, fluoroalkyl, etc.; m is 1 or 2; n is 4-m where M is Ti, Zr or Hf, 5-m where M is V, Nb or Ta, and 3-m where M is a rare earth metal; and L is a ligand of formula II wherein A is a bridging group which links with N and C to form a five- or six-membered (substituted) aromatic ring; R2 is H, a 1-10C alkyl, 6-15C aryl, tri (1-10C) alkylsilyl, etc.; R3 is a 6-15C aryl, 6-15C fluoroaryl, 1-10C alkyl, etc.; and R4 is H, a 1-10C alkyl, 6-15C aryl, etc.
