PURPOSE: To shorten the time till the transmission speed is selected by analyzing error information added to a training fault (FTT) signal at a sender side so as to select automatically the optimum transmission speed.

CONSTITUTION: A control program selecting the transmission speed automatically is stored in a ROM 12 of a communication control means 10 built in a facsimile equipment. An error bit number or an error rate is calculated from a training check sigal received at the receiver side according to the control program and the calculated error information is added to an FTT signal. When a sender side, that is, a caller side receives the FTT signal, error information is detedted from the FIF signal added in the FTT signal, the error information is analyzed to select the optimum transmission speed. Since the optical transmission speed is decided quickly, the time required for fallback is shortened.
