PURPOSE: To make it possible to transmit ultrasonic-wave pulses of high sensitivity by emitting ultrasonic-wave pulses of a small directional angle corresponding to signal pulses in the air from the flank of a cased thickness-vibrating piezoelectric element and by extracting ultrasonic-wave pulses by the piezoelectric element of a wave receiving device.
CONSTITUTION: Thickness-vibrating piezoelectric element 1 is hermetically covered with vibration absorbing member 2 or a vibration control member except its front end surface and armored with casing 3 in contact except the front outside circumference of member 2. Further, front cover 4 with front protective thin film 40 of superio acoustic conductivity is provided to the front outside circumference of member 2 in contact with casing 3 and between film 40 and cover 4, adhesive layer 5 is formed; and vibration absorbing adhesive layer 6 is also formed between casing 3 and cover 4 to constitute wave-transmitting device S that emits ultrasonic-wave pulses in the air and wave-receiving device R receiving ultrsonic-wave pulses. The wave transmitting and receiving devices S and R are arranged in a line opposing to each other and a signal pulse is applied to wave-transmitting device S intermittently to emit an ultrasonic-wave pulse, which corresponds to the pulse, from the flank of element 1.
