PURPOSE: To provide a transparent thin-film EL display with which a background is usually visible by assuring the contrast of the display even when light from a rear surface side is made incident.
CONSTITUTION: This transparent thin-film EL display is formed by forming a transparent thin-film EL element 5 on a glass substrate 4 and hermetically sealing a rear surface plate 6 consisting of photochromic glass and the glass substrate 4 formed with the EL element 5 by disposing the EL element on the inner side and packing a transmissive insulating material 8 therebetween. A photochromic compd. reacts to darken the rear of the EL element 5 so as to shield the light when the display of the EL element 5 is made hardly visible by the light from the rear side of the display. Then, various kinds of information are normally displayed via the front surface substrate and the visibility of the background is assured through the display. The strong incoming light from the rear surface side, in case of incidence of such light, is detected and is shut off by an optical shutter function, by which the information is surely displayed without impairing the contrast of the display. A stable display grade having excellent reliability is thus assured.
