To prevent an insufficiently dried or absorbed ink from sticking to or fouling a pinch roller by setting under control the recording sheet transport at a slower speed when a recording area assignment range available with a recording area assigning means overlaps a position for the sheet pinched by a roller transport means than when the range which does not overlap the position is assigned.
If a recording area 3 is set by a command from an operating part 104 or an external input device 105, CPU 1 decides whether the recording area 3 on a recording sheet 107 is assigned within a range including the part with which a pinch roller 103 comes into contact. If the range with which the pinch roller 102 does not come into contact is set, the routine transport speed of the recording sheet 107 is set and data is recorded on the recording sheet 107 using a printing head 103 while feeding the recording sheet 107 at the routine transport speed. On the other hand, if the range with which the pinch roller 102 comes into contact is assigned, the transport speed is set lower than the routine transport speed, and data is recorded on the recording sheet 107 while it is fed at such a lower transport speed. Consequently, it is possible to prevent the ink from sticking to a roller transport means as a smear or being pressed to spread and blur a record image.
