A transport device 1 constitutes a part of a conveyor line on which an article is transported, and includes: a transport unit 2; and an elevation unit 3 moving up/down the transport unit 2. The transport unit 2 includes two independent transport systems 6 and 7, which are responsible for an ordinary transport operation. In the ordinary transport operation, at least one of the two transport systems 6 and 7 or each of the transport systems 6 and 7 performs a transport operation in which the transport system moves in a forward direction in a high-level profile state. If all the transport systems 6 and 7 do not simultaneously perform the transport operation, one of the remaining transport systems performs a transport preparation operation in which the transport system moves in a backward direction in a low-level profile state or moves in the forward or backward direction while moving down or up in parallel to the transport operation.
