To improve the visual confirmability of an indicating body by providing a cavity of a form for dividing the base part of a protruded cleat formed of a number of substantially U-shaped slender grooves from a board in a tread for staircase or escalator, and arranging a flat indicating body for displaying a pattern of footmark or the like within the cavity.
One flat indicating body 7 having a pattern of footmark displayed in a position where a passenger should stand rightly is provided on the surface part of a tread 4. This indicating body 7 is provided along the bottom surface of a protruding cleat 4D formed of a number of substantially U-shaped slender grooves formed in one direction on the surface of the tread 4 having a board 4B. Namely, a cavity 4F of a height (h) is provided between the base part 4DD of a plurality of protruding cleats 4D formed within the range of the length L2 of the tread 4 and the board 4B, and the indicating body 7 having a thickness (t) is inserted to the cavity 4F. The indicating body is formed of one plate, and the parts within a plurality of the grooves constitute the footmark indicator 7 as an aggregate.
