Abstract:

PURPOSE: To provide a treating agent for viral infections containing CHIKUSETSU saponin III as an active ingredient.

CONSTITUTION: The agent contains a kind of saponin in CHIKUSETSU GIN SENG (a plant in Araliaceae) which has been known to have stomachic, antitussive and expectorant actions. Said compound is particularly effective against viruses in Herpes, especially against herpes simplex virus types 1 and 2, human cytomegalovirus, varicella herpes virus and Epstein-Barr virus. The agent is applied externally, orally, or by injection, particularly it is externally applied to the infected skins or mucous membranes in the case of herpes virus infections.
