PURPOSE: To remove C2H4 and vinyl chlordie completely from an exhaust gas of oxychlorination of C2H4, by chlorinating first unreacted C2H4 in the exhaust gas with a low active catalyst and then unreacted vinyl chloride with a highly active catalyst respectively.
CONSTITUTION: In a process wherein ethylene, hydrogen chloride, and an oxygen- containing gas are subjected to oxychlorination to give a reaction product, from which 1,2-dichloroethane is separated through condensation to give the exhaust gas of the reaction which is treated, unreacted ethylene in the exhaust gas of the oxychlorination is chlorinated using a low active catalyst (e.g., activated, alumina, etc.) which causes only the reaction between ethylene and chlorine, and a small amount of vinyl chloride in the exhaust gas of the reaction from the first process is chlorinated in the presence of a highly active catalyst which is obtained by supporting a metallic chloride (e.g., copper chloride, etc.) on a carrier substance having a specific surface at least 200m2/g, to give 1,2-dichloroethane and 1,1,2- trichloroethane respectively, which are recovered.
