Abstract:
PURPOSE: To obtain a blood glucose-lowering agent for or an agent for treating a patient afflicted with diabetes mellitus that contains a therapeutically effective glucose-lowering amount of 4,4'-bis(2,6-di-tert-butylphneol). CONSTITUTION: A compound of formula I (R1 to R4 are each a 1-6C alkyl, preferably any of R1 to R4 are tert-butyl) is used as a blood glucose-lowering agent for or an agent for treating a patient afflicted with diabetes mellitus by administering to said patient a therapeutically effective glucose lowering amount of the compound thereby retarding or preventing the diabetes mellitus and the complications with diabetes caused by the hyperlipemia relating to the diabetes. This compound is prepared by reaction between the compounds of formulas II and III and ferricyanide in the presence of an alkaline earth metal base followed by reduction of the resultant 3,3'-5,5'- tetraalkyldiphenoquinone with zinc.
