To provide a method of treating sewage sludge to reduce the pathogen content of the sewage sludge.
The treatment method to reduce the pathogen content of the sewage sludge containing pathogens including Escherichia coli includes the steps of: (a) adding to the sewage sludge an effective amount of a phosphorus-containing compound (wherein the phosphorus-containing compound is tetrakis(hydroxymethyl)phosphonium sulfate, tetrakis(hydroxymethyl)phosphonium chloride, tetrakis(hydroxymethyl)phosphonium bromide, tetrakis(hydroxymethyl)phosphonium phosphate, tetrakis(hydroxymethyl)phosphonium acetate or tetrakis(hydroxymethyl)phosphonium oxalate); and (b) keeping the phosphorus-containing compound in contact with the sludge for a sufficient time to reduce the amount of the pathogens present in the sludge by an amount equivalent to a logarithmic reduction value of ≥2, and achieve the level of Escherichia coli in the treated sewage sludge of ≤105 cfu/gds per gram of dry sludge.
