Abstract:

PURPOSE: To improve productivity by inserting cooling materials into the molten steel in a casting mold upon ending of continuous casting thereby increasing the pulling speed at the tail end of the billet.

CONSTITUTION: For example, a steel plate block 5 is used as a cooling material. The block 5 is formed by connecting a pair of perpendicular steel plates 5a, 5a facing to each other to one body with connecting members 5b, 5c in a horizontal direction by welding, etc. and attaching a leg 5d extending perpendicularly downward and a detaining means 6 to one body to the member 5b. An operator pulls the hook part of such means 6 with an insertion bar 7 and inserts the block 5 into the molten steel in a casting mold while suspending and holding the entire part of the block. The pulling speed of a tail end 4 of a billet is increased if the solidification of the molten steel at the tail end 4 is accelerated by forming the block 5 relatively to a small size and using plural pieces of such blocks.
