PURPOSE: To decompose nitrous oxide in waste combustion gas into nitrogen and oxygen by adding hydrogen or carbon monoxide as a reducing agent to the waste combustion gas and bringing this gas into contact with a zeolite-based catalyst.
CONSTITUTION: A small amt. of hydrogen or carbon monoxide as a reducing agent is added to waste combustion gas contg. nitrous oxide so as to accelerate decomposition at such a low temp. as about 500-100°C and the nitrous oxide is decomposed into nitrogen and oxygen by contact with a zeolite-based catalyst. The zeolite is crystalline natural or synthetic zeolite based on silica and alumina, e.g. faujasite, eryonite, mordenite, ZSM-5 or ferrierite. The amt. of the nitrous oxide in the waste combustion gas is effectively reduced with the low- cost reducing agent and a simple apparatus.
