NEW MATERIAL:A tricyclic liquid crystalline compound expressed by formula I having ether bonding [R is 1-5C linear alkyl; n is 2-8; X is H or F; formula II is cyclohexane ring having trans (equatorialequatorial) configuration].
USE: Useful as a material for producing a liquid crystalline displaying device able to be driven at a high temperature and a low electric voltage having excellent solubility with nematic mixed liquid crystal widely used in nowadays and able to sufficiently raise N-1 point with decreasing or suppressing to a slight increase of threshold voltage of the mixed liquid crystal and further suppressing increase of viscosity within a small range by mixing with a nematic mixed liquid crystal.
PREPARATION: A compound expressed by formula III is reacted with magnesium powder and reacted with a compound expressed by formula IV to obtain a compound expressed by formula V. Successively said compound is subjected to dehydrating reaction and catalytic reduction by a catalyst, and further reacted with cuprous cyanide to afford the aimed compound expressed by formula I.
