Abstract:

NEW MATERIAL:The compound of formula I (R1 and R2 are 1-10C straight-chain alkyl; the group of formula IV is cyclohexane ring having transconfiguration).

EXAMPLE: The compound of formula V.

USE: A liquid crystal compound having perpendicular orientation property, capable of increasing a pretilt angle in the case of sealing a conventional liquid crystal and useful for the production of a super twisted nematic liquid crystal display device.

PREPARATION: The compound of formula I can be produced by reacting a compound of formula II with a compound of formula III in a polar solvent such as dimethyl sulfoxide in the presence of a strong base such as potassium t-butoxide.
