Abstract:

PURPOSE: To provide a new trifluorocyclopropane derivative useful for various liquid crystal display elements wide in applicable temperature range and required for low-voltage driving, esp. as a liquid crystal material for active matrix driving.
CONSTITUTION: The objective compound of formula I [R1 is 1-12C alkyl; R2 is H or 1-7C alkyl; Z1 and Z2 are each single bond or CH2CH2 (at least one of them is single bond); ring A is 1,4-cyclohexylene or 1,4-phenylene each of which may be mono- or disubstituted)], e.g. 1-{4-[trans-4-propylcyclohexyl) cyclohexyl]phenyl-1,2,2-trifluorocyclopropane. The compound of the formula I can easily be obtained by reaction of the corresponding new (1-fluoro-1-alkenyl) benzene derivative of formula II with chlorodifluoroacetate under heating. The compound of the present invention is highly chemically stable to heat, light- water, etc., and also excellent in the compatibility with matrix liquid crystal.
