To provide a tripod type constant speed universal joint which is small-sized and light-weighted, and can be manufactured at a low cost without sacrificing the maximum operating angle of the joint while maintaining the strength of the root portion 23 of a journal, which root portion is the weakest portion of an inside joint member 20.
The tripod type constant speed universal joint comprises an outside joint member 10 to be engaged with a first rotary shaft having track grooves 14 so as to transmit a torque, the track grooves 14 being elongated in the axial direction and formed at the positions divided into three equal parts of an inside peripheral surface in the circumferential direction, an inside joint member 20 composed of a boss 22 to be connected with a second rotary shaft 28 so as to transmit a torque and journals 24 radially projecting from the positions divided into three equal parts of the boss in the circumferential direction, and a roller cassette 30 arranged between the outside joint member 10 and the inside joint member 20 so as to transmit the torque. In the present universal joint, the radius of curvature of the root portion 23 of the journals for connecting the boss 22 of the inside joint member 20 with the journals 24 is determined so as to satisfy the relation, R1>R2, and further the radius of curvature gradually decreases from R1 to R2, wherein R1 is the radius of curvature of the root portion of the journal in the circumferential direction of the joint, and R2 is the radius of curvature of the root portion of the journal in the axial direction of the joint.
