CONSTITUTION: A sensor has an electromagnetic energy source 20 that is arranged to generate energy beams downward toward the ground that is adjacent to a vehicle, a diffraction grating 26 that is arranged so that electromagnetic energy reflected from the ground can be applied, a means 32 that is combined to generate an energy beat frequency that depends on the speed of a grating that is related to the ground by guiding diffraction waves, for example, two 0-order and primary-order diffraction waves generated by the diffraction grating 26 by lenses 28 and 30, and a means 34 that responds to the energy beat frequency to supply the sensor signal for indicating the speed of vehicle related to the ground.
