A liquid refrigerant from a condenser 2 is separated from gas through an economizer and refrigerant steam is fed to the low stage compression unit and a high stage compression unit 11 of a multistage compressor 3 and a liquid refrigerant is fed to an evaporator 1. In a so formed turbo refrigerating machine, the evaporator 1 incorporates an economizer brought into a unit. The multistage compressor 3 is formed such that the low stage compression unit and the high stage compression unit 11, both having one or more impellers are arranged on both sides with an electric motor situated at a central part. The rotary shafts of the impellers of the two compression units are a multistage compressor coupled directly to the rotary shaft of the electric motor. An evaporator 1 and a condenser 2 are arranged in adjacently to each other. The multistage compressor 3 is arranged on the evaporator 1 and a duct 12-1 forming a coupling pipe extending from the discharge port of the low stage compression unit of the multistage compressor 3 to the suction port of the high stage compression unit 11 is situated above the condenser 2.
