Abstract:
A combination bearing (10) supporting a shaft (16) interconnecting the turbine and compressor wheels (18) of a turbocharger incorporates a dual film floating journal bearing (20), a squeeze film damper (32) and ball bearing carrier (48), and a ball bearing assembly. An angular contact ball bearing with an outer race (66) mounted in the carrier rolls on an inner race (62) mounted against a shoulder on the shaft (16). The squeeze film damper (32) and ball bearing carrier (48) is pinned to preclude axial or rotational movement. A thrust collar (54) is sandwiched between the ball bearing inner race (62) and the compressor wheel (18) to carry thrust loads.
