To provide a method and an apparatus which effectively detect a big data packet protected by a CRC.

In the apparatus and the method, the effect of old data is removed while new data are added, the checksum of a cyclic redundancy check sign (CRC) calculated from a data stream of the data packet protected by the CRC is updated, collating is performed with a predetermined result, and the data packet protected by the CRC is found. The apparatus includes a memory of length m for memorizing the data stream, an accumulator of length n for calculating the CRC checksum, a remainder circuit which makes data output from the accumulator feed back to the accumulator by using a predetermined CRC polynomial, and a subtraction circuit for eliminating the effect of data output from the memory from the accumulator. A CRC checksum verification circuit collates the CRC checksum with an effective result which shows an existence of the data packet protected by a CRC.
