PURPOSE: To provide an inhibitor having high tyrosinase activity.inhibiting effect, high chemical stability and low toxicity and useful for skin-beautifying cosmetics, etc.
CONSTITUTION: This tyrosinase activity inhibitor has the structure expressed by formula I (R1 groups are each independently H or a 1-9C alkyl) and formula II (R2 groups are each independently H or a 1-9C alkyl). The compound of formula I is e.g. bis(4-methyl-2,6-dihydroxyphenyl)methane and the compound of formula II is e.g. 4,6'-dimethyl-2,2',4',6-tetrahydroxydiphenylmethane. The compound can be produced e.g. by cross-linking 2 molecules of a 5- alkylresorcinol with paraformaldehyde and separating the reaction products by chromatography. The amount of the inhibitor to be compounded to a cosmetic composition is 0.001-20wt.%, preferably 0.01-5wt.%.
