PURPOSE: To obtain the title soln. suitable for spinning a high strength and high modulus fiber, by dissolving an ultra-high MW polyethylene in a fraction obtd. by hydrogenating arom. nuclei of a kerosene fraction, removing n-paraffins with a molecular sieve and distilling fractionally the resultant.
CONSTITUTION: Hydrogenation of arom. nuclei of a kerosene fraction whose b.p. is 160W300°C is carried out by using a metallic catalyst for hydrogenation of arom. nuclei at a pressure of 30W100kg/cm2 and a temp. of 100W300°C. At least a part of n-paraffins in this kerosene fraction is separated and removed by using a molecular sieve comprising a synthetic zeolite. Fractional distillation is carried out by using a rectifier to obtain a fraction of b.p. 180W250°C containing no naphthalene and biphenyl. An ultra-high MW polyethylene whose intrinsic viscosity in decalin at 35°C is 8 or more is dissolved with high concn. and homogeneously in this fraction to prepare a dope for spinning a polyethylene fiber.
