To produce a spray mist of coating material which is suitable for the coating of a workpiece.
An ultrasonic standing wave atomizer is provided with a sonotrode (14) and a component (16) arranged to face the sonotorode (14). In the operation, an ultrasonic field of the standing wave is formed in a space between the sonotrode 14 and the component 16. The atomizer is provided with at least one of a coating material supply device and the coating material is fed to the vicinity of of a region where the particle speed of the sound in the ultrasonic field reaches the maximum value. At least one of the coating material supply device is formed substantially as a pipe piece (26). The shape of the opposite surfaces (18 and 20) of the sonotrode (14) and the component (16) has an effect to make the particle speed of the sound substantially equal to each other along the pipe piece (26).
