Abstract:
PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a powder which has high ultraviolet-shielding effect and can give a sun care cosmetic composition which can be applied in an indiscernible color by using a hollow spherical aluminosilicate. SOLUTION: The hollow spherical aluminosilicate used is allophane being a naturally occurring amorphous hydrated aluminum silicate clay mineral and is obtained by the iron removal and grinding of soil (e.g. Kanuma soil) formed as a result of the weathering of volcanic ash or pumice. It is usual that allophane is in the form of secondary particles being agglomerates of primary particles having a diameter of about 5 nm, and it is suitable that the mean secondary particle diameter is about 5,000 nm or below. If necessary, the hollow spherical aluminosilicate is hydrophobized by treatment with a fatty acid soap, a wax or a silicone oil before use. The amount of the hollow spherical aluminosilicate used in a sun care cosmetic composition is desirably 0.01-90 wt.% based on the total weight of the composition.
