PURPOSE: To obtain an underwater antifouling agent having low pollution, showing excellently stain-resistant effects on underwater contaminating organisms for a long period of time.
CONSTITUTION: An underwater antifouling agent comprises 3-30wt.%, preferably 5-20wt.% N-(2,4,6-trimethylphenyl)maleimide or N-(2,4,6-trimethylphenyl) dichloromaleimide of formula I (X is H or Cl). Antifouling effects are enhanced by using both the maleimide of formula I and a compound selected from (i) 2-(thiocyanomethylthio)benzothiazole, (ii) tetrachloroisophthalonitrile, (iii) a compound of formula II (R is 1-4C alkyl) such as tetraethylthiuram disulfide, (iv) a isothiazolone compound of formula III (X1 and X2 are H, halogen or 1-4C alkyl; Y is 1-18C alkyl, 2-18C alkenyl, aralkyl, aryl, etc.), (v) water-insoluble dithiocarbamic acid metal salt of formula IV to formula VI (R1 to R3 are 1-4C alkyl; M1 is Zn, Mn, Cu, Fe or Ni; M2 is M1 except F; (n) is 2 or 3), (vi) a water-insoluble pyrithione metal salt of formula vii and (vii) 2,2'-dithiobis(pyridine-N-oxide).
