Title:
UNIDIRECTIONAL MODE CONVERTER AND OPTICAL ISOLATOR USING THE SAME
Document Type and Number:
Japanese Patent JPH03288104
Kind Code:
A
Abstract:
PURPOSE:To obtain the unidirectional mode converter and an optical isolator which uses it by forming a specular surface in a waveguide and changing the traveling direction of incident light, and combining its phase shift by reflection with mode conversion in a reciprocal and a nonreciprocal area before and after the reflection. CONSTITUTION:The specular surface 7 for Fresnel reflection is formed in the waveguide 2 and a 1st area for nonreciprocal mode conversion by magnetooptical effect is formed from the incidence end surface 3 for the waveguide light to the specular mirror 7 while a 2nd area for reciprocal mode conversion is formed from the specular surface 7 to an irradiation end surface 4 for the waveguide light. Namely, the specular surface 7 of the waveguide 2 changes the traveling direction of the waveguide light and then a unidirectional mode wherein nonreciprocal effect and reciprocal effect are caused is entered even if the magnetism in the waveguide 2 is in the same direction. Further, mode selectors 5 and 6 or polarizers are combined to constitute the optical isolator and only necessary light is allowed to pass. Consequently, the unidirectional mode converter with high performance which can easily be manufactured ad the optical isolator which uses it can be obtained.
