To provide a new unsaturated epoxy compound produced by bonding a side chain having epoxy group to a specific aromatic vinyl compound, having photosetting and thermosetting properties and giving a (co)polymer useful as a functional polymer material.
The objective unsaturated epoxy compound is expressed by formula I ((n) is 1-5; (m) is 1-5; R is H or methyl), e.g. vinylbenzyl 3,4- epoxycyclohexylmethyl ether. The compound of formula I can be produced by reacting a compound of formula II (X is Cl or Br) with a compound of formula III in an inert solvent preferably in the presence of a basic compound. The compound of formula I is radically polymerizable by itself and copolymerizable with other radically polymerizable monomers. The weight- average molecular weight of the (co)polymer is preferably 1,000-1,000,000. A copolymer capable of forming a film and useful as a radiation-sensitive resin can be expected to be producible by the use of the monomer of formula I.
