To obtain a composition, comprising a specific unsaturated carboxylic acid compound and useful as a raw material for preparing an additive with a low chlorine content without adversely affecting the environment, etc., for addition to a lubricating oil and a usually liquid fuel.
This composition comprises a compound of formula I {R1 and R2 are each H or a hydrocarbon-based group; R3 and R5 are each H or a hydrocarbyl; R4 is a bivalent hydrocarbylene; X is a group of the formula (R6)C =C(R7)(R8) [R6 to R8 are each H or a hydrocarbon-based group (e.g. a group of a 30-100C homopolymer prepared by polymerizing a 2-10C olefin)]; one or more of R1, R2, R6 to R8 are ≥7C hydrocarbon-based groups; (n) is 0 or 1; (y) is 1-200} therein. The compound is obtained by reacting a compound of formula II with a compound of formula III or a compound of formula IV (R9 is R3).
