PURPOSE: To obtain a urethane varnish which is useful in forming an insulating layer for a urethane enamel wire of high chemical resistance and excellent appearance by using xylene and cresol at a specific ratio as a solvent mix.

CONSTITUTION: (A) A polyol, preferably at least a part of the polyol has a high hydroxy value, (B) a blocked polyisocyanate are dissolved in a mixed solvent containing (C) xylenes (e.g. ethylbenzene, o-, m- or p-xylene in an amount of 40-70wt.% and cresols (e.g. phenol, o-, m- or p-cresols, 2,4- dimethylphenol) in an amount of 60-30wt.%. The proportion of the component C in the urethane varnish is preferably 60-80wt.%. The weight ratio of A/B is preferably 100/(50-200).
