PURPOSE: To obtain glass-like and highly transparent materials, for example lenses, optical fibers or the like, by using a fluoropolymer comprising units derived from a specific α-fluoroacrylic acid ester.
CONSTITUTION: A fluoropolymer comprising units derived from an α- fluoroacrylic acid ester of the formula (wherein R represents hydrogen, heavy hydrogen, a halogen, a 1-4C aliphatic group or a 4-10C aromatic residue) (e.g. α-fluoroacylic acid-hexafluoro-isopropyl ester) is used for manufacturing transparent materials, whereby it is preferred that the fluoroacrylic acid ester of the formula is obtained by reacting α-fluoromalonic acid-dimethyl ester with formaldehyde, hydrolyzing thus obtained hydroxymethylated α-fluoromalonic acid dimethyl ester, decarboxylating the hydrolyzed product to dehydrate it and esterifying thus obtained fluroacrylic acid with alcohol of the formula H-C(CF3)2- R.
