A shape interpretation part 12 inputs two dimensions stored in an image storage part 11 sequentially as an N×N dot matrix, extracts specific feature quantities from the dot matrix (extraction of distance information and area extraction as representative examples), performs shape interpretation according to an interpretation rule stored in an interpretation rule storage part 13, thereby outputting an indication corresponding to a matching interpretation rule as an interpretation result. The indication contains a choice of an icon, the start of application, cursor movement, etc. A display part 14 makes a display (e.g. movement of a cursor, display of a message upon occasion, etc.), on which the interpretation result of the shape interpretation part 12 is reflected. A cursor switching part 15 controls the switching of the cursor according to the interpretation result of the shape interpretation part 12.
