To provide a valve control system for an internal combustion engine which is particularly suitable for making an engine valve to be selectively actuated or to be unactuated.
This system contains an inside rocker arm 18 to contact with a cam 20 and an outside rocker arm 22 to engage with a valve, and the inside and outside arms 18 and 22 are combined with each other, and pivotally contact with an output plunger 30 of a stationary lash adjuster 32. A sliding latch member 28 can move between an activity position to transmit force of the cam to the valve through both arms 18 and 22 by effectively joining both inside and outside arms 18 and 22 to each other by a latch and an inactivity position to mutually, relatively and freely move both arms 18 and 22. A spring 26 acting between both arms 18 and 22 presses the inside arm 18 so as to engage with the cam 20 and the outside arm 22, and presses the outside arm 22 so as to engage with the valve and the lash adjuster 32. A positive stopper existing between both arms 18 and 22 acts to restrict leak down of the lash adjuster 32.
