To highly accurately detect the rotating position of a cam with respect to the rotating position of a cam drive means in a valve drive system for an internal combustion engine.
The valve drive system for the internal combustion engine is provided with a motor 24 etc. for driving a cam shaft 12 etc. A projecting tooth 40 is provided in each cam shaft 12 etc. An MRE sensor 36 etc. is arranged in a position opposing to the projecting tooth 40. The motor 24 etc. has a built-in motor angle sensor for detecting the rotating position of the motor 24 etc. At the approach timing when the projecting tooth 40 approaches to the MRE sensor 36 etc. and the separation timing when the projecting tooth 40 separates from the MRE sensor 36 etc., each MRE sensor 36 etc. receives a generated detection signal, and the motor angle sensor detects the rotating position of the motor 24 etc. Central values of the rotating positions of the motor 24 etc. at the approach timing and separation timing detected by the motor angle sensor, respectively are calculated as the central position of the projecting tooth 40.
