To provide a valve plate and a piston pump or motor capable of inhibiting the occurrence of cavitation erosion with a simple construction.
A piston pump 20 is configured so that a plurality of piston chambers 31 are formed to make each piston 24 perform reciprocating motion in each piston chambers 31. The piston pump 20 includes a valve plate 21. In the valve plate 21, there are formed a suction port 41 and a discharge port 42 to which respective piston chambers 31 are alternately connected, a notch 43 joined to the end portion of the discharge port 42 and extending from the end portion toward the suction port 41, and an opening portion 44 joined to the end of the notch 43, connectable to respective piston chambers 31. The opening portion 44 has an opening area larger than the end portion of the notch 43.
