To provide a valve system of an internal combustion engine suppressing occurrence of abnormal sound at the time of changing over operating characteristics of an intake valve and an exhaust valve and reducing damage and abrasion of a variable valve system mechanism in an internal combustion engine having the variable valve system mechanism.
A first rocker arm 32 is provided with a cylinder 50 having an opening 53 in a part of a sliding surface, and a piston 51 energized toward one sliding end of the cylinder whose side surface does not close the opening by an elastic member 52. A second rocker arm 135 is provided with an abutting projection 135a whose tip end 135c is inserted from the opening into the inside of the cylinder when the piston is positioned at one sliding end of the cylinder and abutting on a side surface when the side surface of the piston is located in a position to close the opening. A slant surface 135e positioned at a corner on one sliding end side of the cylinder is formed at the tip end of the abutting projection.
