PURPOSE: To reduce the amount of leakage gas, by closing a pressure chamber located frontwards of an axial seal portion when the pressure in a high-pressure side pressure chamber is raised, raising the pressure in said pressure chamber by the gas leaked from clearance at a sealing portion, and thereby decreasing the pressure difference on the opposite sides of the sealing portion.
CONSTITUTION: A vane compressor of this invention is designed such that there exists a region where a space confined by the outer surface of a rotor 1, the inner surface of a cam ring 2, a front and a rear plates (not shown), vanes 3 and an axial seal where the rotor 1 and the cam ring 2 are located mostly closely to each other constitutes a pressure chamber 16 located frontwards of the axial seal portion in respect of rotation of the rotor 1 after pressure in a pressure chamber 16 located on the opposite side of the axial seal portion in respect of rotation of the rotor 1 is raised to a discharge pressure determined by the operational conditions of a refrigerating system. With such an arrangement, it is enabled to make the pressure difference on the opposite sides of the axial seal as small as possible and to prevent intrusion of a high-pressure, high-temperature coolant into a loo-pressure side through the axial seal, so that the volumetric efficiency of the compressor can be raised.
