Abstract:

To provide a vapor-phase isocyanate production method which is commercially advantageous.

The production of an isocyanate by reacting a suitable primary amine with phosgene in a vapor phase is practiced under adiabatic conditions by ensuring that the average residence time in a reaction chamber is 0.05-15 sec. Thus, desirably, it is possible to avoid a problem of temperature control irrespectively of the shape of a reactor, to produce an isocyanate in a high space-time yield on an industrial scale, and to accomplish a substantial increase in the length of the operation time of a production plant.
