PURPOSE: To prevent drastic increase in the discharged amount of unburned component due to canister purge at the time of cold state of an engine.
CONSTITUTION: An adsorbent for adsorbing and collecting the fuel in intake air is interposed in the engine intake system of the upstream of a fuel injection valve in the downstream of an exhaust gas recirculation route as well as a purge route. The fuel is prevented from being purged from the adsorbent by exhaust heat by inhibiting exhaust gas recirculation at the time of cold state of an engine (from S2 to S4), and the fuel fed to the engine is adsorbed and collected by the adsorbent through the purge route due to canister purge. Even when the temperature of the engine is raised, exhaust gas recirculation is inhibited at the time of idling (from S3 to S4), and it is avoided that the exhausted amount of unburned component is increased by the fuel purged from the adsorbent.
