To provide a device and a method for controlling a variable compression ratio engine can raise temperature of exhaust gas without deteriorating combustion stability.
A control device for the variable compression ratio engine 100 is provided with an ignition device 7 igniting air fuel mixture in a combustion chamber of an engine 100, a catalyst 33 purifying exhaust gas discharged from a combustion chamber 4, a compression ratio variable mechanism 40 making compression ratio variable by changing piston top dead center position of the engine 100, a catalyst temperature determination means S103 determining whether temperature of the catalyst 33 is lower than activation temperature or not, and an exhaust gas temperature rising idling control means S104 executing idling operation so as to raise temperature of exhaust gas by setting compression ratio to a high compression ratio side by the compression ratio variable mechanism 40 and retarding ignition timing of an ignition device 7 if catalyst temperature is lower than activation temperature during engine start. Consequently, exhaust gas temperature can be raised without deteriorating combustion stability and the catalyst 33 can be activated at early stage.
