To provide a variable compression ratio internal combustion engine in which an air-fuel mixture is efficiently burned in both a main combustion chamber and an auxiliary chamber by a simple structure.
This variable compression ratio internal combustion engine comprises an intake port 16 having an intake valve 17, an exhaust port having an exhaust valve, the main combustion chamber 14 having an ignition plug 15, the auxiliary chamber 30 communicating with the main combustion chamber 14, and a solenoid shut-off valve 32. The shut-off valve 32 and the auxiliary chamber 30 are disposed at the positions to which the air-fuel mixture can be easily introduced. The auxiliary chamber 30 is communicated with the intake port 16 or the exhaust port through the main combustion chamber 14 when the shut-off valve 32 is opened and the intake valve 17 or the exhaust valve is opened.
