This variable damping force type damper for the vehicle comprises a friction generating means 50 for generating a friction force between a cylinder 21 and a rod 24. The friction generating means 50 is constituted of: a shoe member 51 arranged freely to move in the radial direction of the cylinder 21; a magnetic attracted member 52 arranged freely to move in the axial direction of the cylinder 21; an electromagnetic coil 54 arranged in the attracted member 52 at an axial end surface of the cylinder 21 so as to attract the attracted member 52; and a plate spring 55 interposed between the shoe member 51 and the attracted member 52 so as to move the shoe member 51 in the radial direction of the cylinder 21 when the attracted member 52 is moved in the axial direction of the cylinder 21.
