To solve the following problem: since a variable dispersion compensator using heaters has a plurality of heaters formed on one substrate, the variable dispersion compensator has deterioration in dispersion compensation value due to heat interference.
The variable dispersion compensator includes a substrate, a fiber grating arranged on the substrate and Bragg-reflecting an input optical signal of predetermined wavelength, a plurality of heat generating units that heat the fiber grating, and a temperature control unit which generates a driving signal for controlling the heat generating units based upon temperature information detected by a temperature sensing element measuring the temperature of the fiber grating to control calorific value of the heat generating units. Driving electrode wiring for transmitting the driving signal from the temperature control unit to the heat generating units is formed on a substrate, a thin plate electrode pattern is further formed on the driving electrode wiring, and the heat generating units are arranged on the thin plate electrode pattern along the axis of the fiber grating.
