This variable displacement axial piston hydraulic machine 71 is formed as a sub-assembly by assembling a group of parts including a cylinder block 46, a piston 47 and a center section 75 on a rotating shaft 26 at the external of a housing 23t in advance, and fitting stopper members 353 and 356 on the rotating shaft 26 at both end positions of the group of parts to prevent the slipping-off of the group of parts from the pump shaft 26, and the operation check is executed in a state of the sub-assemble. Then the sub-assembly 375 is assembled inside of the housing 23t.
