This variable displacement compressor comprises a shaft 5; bearings 25, 26 rotatably supporting both end portions of the shaft 5; a swash plate 10 slidably and tiltably attached to the shaft 5; and a control valve 60 provided at a middle part of a passage 57 communicating a discharge chamber 12 and a crank chamber 8 storing the swash plate 10, and opening/closing the passage 57. By opening/closing operation of the control valve 60, the pressure in the crank chamber 8 is changed, and a tilting angle of the swash plate 10 is changed, thereby increasing/decreasing discharging capacity. The compressor is provided with a controller 70 controlling an opening of the control valve 60 on the basis of output values of load sensors 52, 51 provided on the bearings 25, 26.
