To adjust the variation of volume efficiency between the cylinders by differentiating the maximum lift timings of low speed and high speed cams in at least one cylinder of a multicylindered engine.
In this variable valve device for an internal combustion engine, the valve mechanisms are arranged in every cylinder to open or close the intake and exhaust valves disposed in a plurality of cylinders, respectively. The device is provided with a valve lift variation means A for varying the lifting amount of the intake or exhaust valve by selecting the cam different in that lifting amount every cylinder, and a valve timing variation means B for varying the opening/closing timing of the intake or exhaust valve by the cam different in the valve lifting amount every cylinder. According to the operation condition of the engine, the maximum lift timing of the cam different in the valve lifting amount in at least one cylinder is differentiated.
