To effectively increase efficiency of energy regeneration in which motive energy of a vehicle is converted to electric energy with an electric generator and recovered during an engine fuel cut.
A vehicle control device rapidly and efficiently emits residual combustion gas in a combustion chamber, an exhaust pipe 19, and an EGR pipe 25, at a time of fuel cut of an engine 11, by performing delayed control of throttle valve closing, in which a throttle valve 14 is kept open until a predetermined delay time elapses after starting fuel cut, and then closing the throttle valve 14, and EGR valve opening/closing control which repeats opening and closing of an EGR valve 26. Afterwards, the vehicle control device effectively reduces pump loss of the engine 11 by performing valve overlapping control for controlling variable valve timing mechanisms 22 and 23 so as to open the EGR valve 26 while keeping the throttle valve 14 closed, and provide a valve overlapping period within an interval between a late stage of an exhaust stroke and an early stage of an intake stroke of the engine 11.
