PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a vehicle control device that improves fuel economy performance by efficiently performing coasting control, acceleration for returning vehicle speed decelerated by coasting travelling to target vehicle speed and acceleration for making an inter-vehicle distance reach a target inter-vehicle distance, in order to improve engine output control during auto cruising.SOLUTION: A vehicle 1 is equipped with a transmission 3 comprising a plurality of friction fastener elements for interrupting transmission of power between an engine 2 and driving wheels 4 and 4, fuel control means 2b for controlling fuel supply to the engine, and travelling control means 10, which when a prescribed coasting condition is satisfied during auto-cruise control, performs coasting control so that transmission of power between the engine 2 and the driving wheels 4 and 4 is interrupted and fuel supply is stopped; and when an acceleration condition is satisfied, performs target fuel efficiency control so that the output of the engine is controlled to maintain the maximum fuel efficiency corresponding to rotation speed of the engine on the basis of fuel efficiency characteristics of the engine 2, so as to improve fuel economy performance.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 5
